Hi Saycheese, It's the same as vehicle registration or car plate fees charged in other "reasonable" states. Here in S.C., your car registration is charged similar to a personal property tax, and each county has their own rate. For example, I have a 92 Chevy Avalanche which was originally registered in Gaffney and the tag fee was about $500/year. I live in Spartanburg County and had my wife change the registration to SPB and the tag fee went up to over $600/year. When we lived in Washington state we had the same ridiculous fees until the voters revolted and yearly car tag fees went down to $35/year. Let's face folks, the tax base is disappearing with every plant that closes in S.C. and the State and Local governments must get the money from someplace. The sad thing is that car tags are among the highest in the country, and property tax rates are skyrockecting , and we are among the bottom 3 states in the U.S. for education and job creation. Don't want to sound negative, but things have to change in Columbia, if we don't want to drop to the bottom of the list!!!

We have what is called excise tax in Indiana on the registration and it used to be like that until the purchase of new vehicles went down and they decided to give us a break and it's been reduced alot. It is kinda uncalled for to have to pay $500 to $1000 for license plates on a newer vehicle. It sure hurts the Automotive sales.
